The Feedrate is Too High

The programmed feedrate may be too high to cut smoothly through the programmed direction changes.

Corrective Action:

Reduce the programmed feedrate. Refer to the tooling manufacturer's instructions for guidance as to the best speeds and feeds to use for the tooling and workpiece material. Test-run your application and use spindle speed and feed overrides to find a good speed/feed combination.

Sharp Corners on the Cutting Tool

Cutting tools with sharp corners can leave coining marks on the floor of the surface being machined.

Corrective Action:

Change to a tool or insert that has a corner radius or a corner chamfer.

Sharp Angles in Toolpath

When a direction change is programmed as a straight linear motion (G01) into another straight linear motion, the sudden direction change can cause the tool to leave coining marks the surface of the part.

Corrective Actions:

Add a fillet radius (G02/G03) to the sharp angles in your program. This lets the machine cut the angle more gradually and prevents the sudden motion that can cause coining.

The FIR Filter Parameters Have Incorrect Values

The FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filter is a Haas software feature that uses the servo motor to achieve higher acceleration rates with smoother transitions, reduced cycle times, and reduced vibration from machine motion. FIR filters come standard and are always active on all Haas mills with M17.00 and newer software and Haas lathes with L10.00 and newer software.

The FIR filter parameter values must match on all linear and rotary axes, or accuracy and surface finish issues will appear. 
The correct value for these parameters is 64 for all Haas mills.

The Notch Filter Parameters are Incorrect

The Command Notch Filter lets engineering separate the resonant frequencies of the machine from the commands given to the servo controller.  Simply explained, the notch filter keeps frequencies generated by the motion of the machine away from a frequency that excites the structure of the machine that would induce vibration. The notch filter parameters are based on machine frame size and should not be changed from the factory set value. Notch filters are available on mills with M18.00A and newer software.

Vibration from External Sources

Vibration from other machines, shop equipment, heavy machinery, passing trains, etc. can cause finish problems.

Corrective Actions:

Stop other machines, forklifts, overhead cranes, etc. during cutting. This may be helpful if the machine’s foundation is inadequate.

Insufficient Drawbar Hold Force

The drawbar is a spindle component that holds the tool in place with spring force. Over time, the springs can wear and reduce the drawbar hold force.

Corrective Action:

Measure the machine's drawbar hold force. Refer to the Drawbar Force Reference Chart for the drawbar force range for your spindle.

If it is insufficient, order a replacement drawbar from parts.haascnc.com.

The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training, experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.
