Main Processor - Dual Battery Replacement Kit - Installation - Introduction

The dual battery backup PCB makes a battery replacement easier and more reliable. The two batteries on the dual battery backup PCB provide power to the processor while the machine is off, and while you replace the batteries one at a time. This saves the machine's data when you replace the batteries.

Safety Notes
Caution: When you do maintenance or repair on CNC machines and their components, you must always follow basic safety precautions. This decreases the risk of injury and mechanical damage.

Do these steps before you do work in the machine or in the control cabinet:
  • Set the main circuit breaker to the OFF position.
  • Use an approved lock with an approved safety tag. Always follow lock-out procedures in accordance to local government rules.
  • After turning off the machine, wait at least 5 minutes before working in the control cabinet, to allow power to dissipate. Wait for the voltage indicator LED on the vector drive to go off completely.
  • Always turn off the main air supply when you work on any part of the pneumatic system.
  • Make sure to rest the spindle head on a block of wood when work is done on a vertical axis. This will prevent any unintended movement that could result in the axis falling.
  • Never alter any safety circuits on the machine.
  • Never change any parameter while in DEBUG mode (Classic Haas Control) and the servos ON. Put the machine in Emergency Stop mode to change any parameters.
  • Never operate the machine in DEBUG mode (Classic Haas Control).
You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes. Serious damage to the machine components can result in costly repairs. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training and experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. The repair and service work performed by your HFO is protected with a limited warranty.
danger: Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not fully understand. If you have any doubts about doing a procedure contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service visit.

Prerequisites

  • Two 3.0 V Lithium batteries, BR or CR-2/3A style, are required to install the dual battery PCB.
  • Kit P/N 93-32-4307 does not include batteries.

Machine Compatibility

You can install the dual battery PCB on all machines, except machines with these processors:
  • Processors with 16MB built from January, 1996 through January, 2005 (Motorola 68K 16MB, P/N: 93-1031 or 93-1032).

These processors are the only processors with (2) batteries soldered to the PCB.

  • Processors built from December, 2005 through June, 2006 (Cold Fire I, P/N: 93-32-4401C).

These processors do not have an external battery connector.

Main Processor - Dual Battery Replacement Kit - Installation

Step 1

caution: When you handle a PCB, you must wear an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) strap.

Backup your files. Go to diy.haascnc.com to learn how. Search "backup."

Step 2

Install a VELCO STRIP [B] on a clean space [1] inside the control cabinet as shown.

Attach the DUAL BATTERY PCB [A] to the VELCRO STRIP [B]. If they are not installed, install the (2) batteries [2]. Use the (2) clips [3].

Connect the DUAL BATTERY PCB [A] cable [4] to the P1 connector on the processor PCB.

note: Remove the PCBs to get access to the processor PCB as necessary. Be sure to label the cables you disconnect to assist in installation.

Step 3

Cut the old battery leads [2]. Use a pair of cutters [1].

Discard the old battery.

Install the PCBs and the cover as necessary.

Be aware: Many service and repair procedures should be done only by authorized personnel. The service technicians at your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) have the training, experience, and are certified to do these tasks safely and correctly. You should not do machine repair or service procedures unless you are qualified and knowledgeable about the processes.

Danger: Some service procedures can be dangerous or life-threatening. DO NOT attempt a procedure that you do not completely understand. Contact your Haas Factory Outlet (HFO) and schedule a service technician visit if you have any doubts about doing a procedure.
